A structure serving Sino-French research

Objectives

In 2010, the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS de Lyon), the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the East China Normal University (ECNU) joined forces to create the Joint Research Institute for Science and Society (JoRISS).
This research structure established as its fundamental missions:
• Facilitating the development of Sino-French scientific projects involving 
   the three partners
• Stimulating interdisciplinary research
• Increasing the contribution of science to solving the major societal
  challenges of the 21st century
• Creating links between academic and industrial research
• Reinforcing the PROSFER doctoral exchange program

How JoRISS operates

Research projects elaboration:
JoRISS offers assistance in identifying partners and in establishing scientific contacts

Research projects incubation:
JoRISS provides seed funding (1 or 2 years) for projects selected through an annual call for projects

Research projects development:
JoRISS acts as a hosting platform for
• Selected projects at the end of their incubation phase
• Projects started independently of JoRISS

Eligibility:
Sino-French projects involving a majority of researchers from the partner institutions

Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Education Sciences

History

January 2011: Launch of the first three research projects.
21st October 2010: Inauguration of the JoRISS premises at the ECNU by the delegation of Senator-Mayor of Lyon.
31st August 2010: Signature of the General Cooperation Agreement by the three founding partners in the French Pavilion at the Shanghai World Exposition.
May 2009: Signature of a Provisional Agreement.
2009: Elaboration of the General Cooperation Agreement.
2008: First discussions on the preparation of a project for the creation of a joint research entity.

ENS Lyon
Heritier of the ENS de Fontenay and the ENS de Sain-Cloud founded in 1880 by Jules Ferry, the ENS Lyon is a highly selective grande école located in Lyon, France. As one of France's four Écoles normales supérieures, ENS Lyon is associated with a strong French tradition of excellence and public service. It trains researchers and teachers in the sciences and the humanities.
CNRS
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research) is a government-funded research organization, under the administrative authority of France's Ministry of Research.

ECNU
The East China Normal University, one of China’s key universities under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education, is sponsored by the prestigious national program “Project 211” and “Project 958”. ECNU is a high-level normal university founded in October 1951, based on the former Great China University and Kwang Hua University, incorporated with part of Fudan University and Tongji University etc.
